In the skincare world there’s a big difference between “organic” and “certified organic.” When I began requesting proof—specifically a valid USDA organic certificate—some suppliers couldn’t provide documentation. In other words, they used “organic” as a marketing term without completing the robust, third‑party certification process. Certification matters because it helps verify that plant ingredients are non‑GMO and grown without prohibited pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, and other practices not allowed under USDA organic standards.
That’s why obtaining USDA organic certification for skincare products is meaningful: it reassures customers that ingredients labeled “organic” are held to the same high bar as food labeled “organic.” Under USDA rules, products labeled “certified organic” must be made with at least 95% certified-organic agricultural ingredients (again, excluding water and salt).
